Bir Ghars

بئر غرس

Bir Ghars

Overview

Bir Ghars is a historic well located in the Quba area of southern Madinah, known for its direct connection to the personal life of the Prophet ﷺ. The well has been preserved and marked for visitors, though water is no longer drawn from it. It sits in a quiet area surrounded by residential buildings near Masjid Quba.

Historical significance

The Prophet ﷺ personally used this well for drinking water and wudu (ablution), and he expressed a specific wish that his blessed body be washed with water from Bir Ghars after his passing. This request was honored by his companions, and Ali ibn Abi Talib is reported to have used water from this well during the Prophet's funeral preparations. The fact that the Prophet ﷺ singled out this particular well gives it a unique status among Madinah's many historic water sources.

Did you know?

The Prophet ﷺ is reported to have spat into the well, which was considered a great blessing, and the water was said to have remained sweet thereafter.
