Battle of the Trench Site

موقع غزوة الخندق

Mawqi' Ghazwat al-Khandaq

Overview

The Battle of the Trench site encompasses the area along the northern and western approaches to ancient Madinah where a massive defensive ditch was excavated. Today, the area is largely urbanized and the trench itself no longer exists, but the Seven Mosques complex and informational markers indicate the general location. The site stretches along the foot of Mount Sala in what is now a developed neighborhood.

Historical significance

In 5 AH (627 CE), a coalition of 10,000 warriors from the Quraysh, Ghatafan, and other tribes marched on Madinah to annihilate the Muslim community once and for all. On the advice of Salman al-Farsi, the Prophet ﷺ ordered a trench dug along Madinah's exposed northern flank, a tactic the Arabs had never seen. The siege lasted approximately a month before Allah sent a fierce wind and unseen forces that scattered the confederate camps, leading to their complete withdrawal without breaching the city's defenses.

Did you know?

The Prophet ﷺ personally participated in digging the trench alongside his companions, and during the excavation, they encountered a massive boulder that only broke after the Prophet ﷺ struck it three times, with each strike producing a flash of light.

Hadith

The Prophet participated in digging the trench alongside the companions, and miraculous events occurred during the siege.
