Jabal Rumah

جبل الرماة

Jabal ar-Rumah

Overview

Jabal Rumah, the Mount of the Archers, is a small hill located adjacent to the main Uhud battlefield site. Despite its modest height, this unassuming mound played a decisive role in one of Islam's most important battles. A marker and sign at the site help visitors identify the exact location where the archers were stationed.

Historical significance

The Prophet ﷺ stationed fifty skilled archers on this hill under the command of Abdullah ibn Jubayr with strict orders not to leave their positions under any circumstances, regardless of whether the battle appeared won or lost. When most archers abandoned their posts to collect war spoils after seeing initial Muslim success, the Quraysh cavalry led by Khalid ibn al-Walid exploited the gap and launched a devastating flanking attack. This turning point transformed what seemed like a clear Muslim victory into a painful lesson about the consequences of disobedience.

Did you know?

Abdullah ibn Jubayr and the handful of archers who remained at their posts fought to the death, obeying the Prophet's command to the very end despite being hopelessly outnumbered.

Hadith

The Prophet stationed Abdullah ibn Jubayr with 50 archers saying: 'Do not leave this spot even if you see birds snatching us away.'
