Masjid Ali ibn Abi Talib
Overview
Masjid Ali ibn Abi Talib is one of the Seven Mosques, named after the fourth Rightly Guided Caliph and the Prophet's cousin and son-in-law. It is a compact mosque within the Seven Mosques historical complex on the western slopes of Mount Sala. The mosque has been rebuilt in a clean modern style that complements the surrounding cluster.
Historical significance
Ali ibn Abi Talib was among the foremost defenders of Madinah during the Battle of the Trench, standing guard and engaging enemy fighters who attempted to cross the ditch. He is famously remembered for his single combat with the Quraysh champion Amr ibn Abd Wudd, who managed to leap across the trench on horseback. Ali's bravery during this confrontation became one of the most celebrated episodes of early Islamic military history.
Did you know?
When Amr ibn Abd Wudd crossed the trench and challenged the Muslims to single combat, Ali was the only one who stood up three times to accept, finally receiving the Prophet's permission to engage him.
